Geek Girl Bloggers Holiday Card Swap

Dec 28, 2016

Oh wow, can you believe that 2016 is finally coming to an end? This year has been absolutely awful, and I'll bet I can speak for everyone when I say good riddance.

I'm definitely looking forward to a fresh start next year, but first I want to share the cards that I received in this year's Geek Girls x Bloggers holiday card swap. We had so many gals sign up this time around that we were split into three groups! I'm so thrilled to see more and more geeky ladies join this fantastic community.

I loved all of the cards I got, but a couple of them really wowed me with their creativity. This one from Gingi of Domestic Geek Girl is so dang cute...I mean, that festive Dalek is so perfect!

I'm just going to keep this card from Mickey of Nerd∙ily up as decor because duh, it's awesome! Stranger Things was one of the best things to come out of this crappy year, and this handmade card definitely did it justice.

Liana wasn't a part of my little swap group, but I was lucky enough to end up with one of her cards anyway and it's so gorgeous that I just had to share! Such a beautiful little hand-drawn family, right?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Geek Girls x Bloggers is incredible. These girls make blogging so much fun, and as this year draws to an end, I just want to say how thankful I am to be a part of this community.

I hope you all had a beautiful holiday, and if I don't get another post up before the end of the week, then happy happy new year!

A Merry Fictional Blog Challenge

Dec 20, 2016

Hi friends! Things have been a little quiet around these parts since I've been stressing the eff out over Christmas shopping. It's okay, I finished all my holiday shopping over the weekend and now all I have to do is wrap them, guh. It's almost over though, since Christmas is right around the corner! This year just flew by, didn't it?

Katy from Oh So Geeky came up with a holiday blog challenge that I wanted to join in on, so here we are! Writing new blog posts while my life is crazy busy can be pretty stressful, so I definitely appreciate fun blog prompts like this. Without further ado, let's get to the questions:

Advent Calendar: Traditions you celebrate during December?

My husband and I have been picking out ornaments together for the past couple years, which is shaping into a pretty fun Christmas tradition

Carols: What's your favorite song(s)?

For as long as I can remember, my sister and I listened to the album When My Heart Finds Christmas by Harry Connick Jr. every single year in December. There's a song on there called "(It Must've Been Ol') Santa Claus" and it's the absolute best!

Coal: A naughty character you'd send coal to?

The first one that comes to mind is Draco Malfoy. I mean, sure he had a change of heart at the end of the series, but he was such a mean boy to Harry and the gang. Definitely deserves some coal in his stocking.

Fireplace: Favorite Christmas movie that melts your heart?

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm a sucker for Christmas movies! I love cheesy, romantic ones most of all...but my very favorite will always be A Christmas Story. It's my dad's favorite, so we watched it every year and I guess it just kind of grew on me.

Gingerbread: What's your favorite holiday snack?

Peppermint bark! For me, peppermint is everything at Christmastime.

Hot Cocoa: What's your favorite drink?

Peppermint hot cocoa! Peppermint and chocolate were meant to be together, nom nom nom.

Mistletoe: Character you'd like to meet under the mistletoe?

Well, if I weren't married and all, it'd be Warner from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. I just love, love, love him.

Mittens: A cozy outfit that keeps you warm during winter?

I don't need to bundle up much during winter since Southern California is always pretty darn warm. I did just buy this super cute purple dragon onesie though, and it's quite cozy.

North Pole: If you could spend Christmas anywhere (even fictional), where would you go?

Oh, Hogwarts FOR SURE. So snowy and, that would mean I'm a witch, and I'd be totally down for that.

Naughty: Three characters who'd make the Naughty List.

Draco Malfoy (of course), the Darkling from the Grisha series, and my beau Warner from the Shatter Me series.

Nice: Three characters who'd make the Nice List.

Simon from the Mortal Instruments series, Colin from An Abundance of Katherines, and Levi from Fangirl.

Presents: A book or movie on your wishlist?

If we could fast-forward to May for the release of A Court of Wings and Ruin, the third book in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas, that would be great.

Rudolph: What's your favorite TV holiday special?

I'm not quite sure I have one! Unless A Year Without a Santa Claus counts. Snow Miser and Heat Miser always make me smile!

Santa: A character you'd love to exchange presents with? What would you get them?

Jess from New Girl. She's basically my patronus, and I think she'd devote a lot of time to finding me a perfect gift. I'd get her this super sweet unicorn lamp from Target that I've been lusting after for a while now=)

Scrooge: A villain you'd help see life in a different way?

Definitely this guy. Oh, Kilgrave. I know he was creepy and demented, but I was kinda pulling for him to turn out to be a good guy after all.

Snowflake: Something that makes you feel special.

My husband, every single day. He loves me so much that he's been putting up with my cheesy Christmas movies all month...he's the best, and I'm so thrilled to get to spend another Christmas with him.

Tree: What do you decorate your house with for the season?

We have a gorgeous purple tree (with pink lights!) up in a corner, and we have some little holiday knick-knacks scattered around and nutcrackers in front of the fireplace. We don't do much holiday decorating around here...we're just so lazy=P

Yuletide: The top 3 things in your life that make you the most happy?

Aside from my husband, family, and kitty (because those are a given, right?), I'd say Overwatch, macaroni & cheese, and Netflix.

BONUS: Ugly Christmas Sweater: Would you wear a sweater Molly Weasley made you or avoid it like the plague?

I would absolutely wear it. Molly Weasley is a queen and I would do anything for her.

Thanks again, Katy! If you want to join in on this blog challenge, you totally should. The more the merrier, right? Just check out Katy's original post about the prompt here, copy and paste the questions, and let me know if you join in the comments below because I'd love to read your answers!

Geeking Out About: December

Dec 13, 2016

You guys, Christmas is less than two weeks away! I've been watching holiday movies and loving the cold(ish) weather we've been having in Southern California so much that I haven't managed to get any gift shopping done yet...whoops. I guess I know what I'll be doing all weekend, haha.

Anyway, I managed to peel myself off of the couch long enough to put together a new Geeking Out About post! December is so busy with the holidays and the shopping craziness, but there are also tons of fun things going on. Here's what I'm currently geeking out about and what I'm looking forward to this month.

Pokémon Moon - Okay, of course Pokémon Moon tops my list. I played almost nonstop over the weekend and I'm completely loving the story! As far as I can tell, I'm almost done, but there have already been a few twists and turns so I'm not really sure how much is left. I highly recommend this game, whether you're a seasoned Pokémon fan or just beginning!

Mozart in the Jungle - If you've never seen this show, you're seriously missing out. Gael García Bernal is so adorable, and this show just keeps getting better and better. Amazon Prime released the third season on December 9th, so I've only gotten to see the first couple episodes but I'm hoping for big things to happen this season.

12 Dates of Christmas - One of my favorite cheesy holiday movies of all time. Amy Smart is always perfect, and who can resist Zach Morris from Saved by the Bell...right? Sadly, Netflix seems to have gotten rid of all of the classics like Christmas Cupid with Christina Milian and Holiday in Handcuffs with Melissa Joan Hart, so if you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them!

Shadow and Bone - Okay, I realize this book is a few years old, but I just started it and I'm enjoying it so far. It's a pretty standard YA story, but I've heard that the series gets better so I'm excited to see what happens.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Yeah yeah, I know this is old too...but OH MY GOSH I love it so much! I played Wild World years ago and was obsessed so I knew once I got my new 3DS that I had to give New Leaf a go! So darn cute

Rogue One - Only three days away, people! I won't go out to see it when it premieres since I hate crowded movie theaters and all, but I'll definitely be seeing it soon. Who's seeing it opening day?!

Ever the Hunted - I've been hearing some great things about this new book by Erin Summerill. It's about seventeen-year-old Britta, who spends her days tracking criminals with her bounty hunter father. One day, her dad is killed and the alleged murderer is none other than the boy who broke her heart! There's a quest, dark magic, yada yada...sounds like something I'll enjoy, and man, the cover is gorgeous!

Doctor Who Christmas Special - This year's Doctor Who Christmas special seems a little odd, based on the super cheesy trailer. I'll watch it regardless because, I mean, it's Doctor Who! And how cool is it that this special will be based in New York?!

Passengers - I'm a huge sucker for sci-fi, so this movie definitely caught my eye. First off, Chris Pratt is in it, which is reason enough to watch anything, right? Really though, I love the premise. I've actually dreamt about walking up too soon during extended space that weird? Ah well.

Overwatch Holiday Event - Time for new holiday skins! The Overwatch holiday event patch drops today and I'm so excited to get home from work and play all night. I'm surprised nothing they had planned for the event leaked early (that I could find, at least), but it's pretty cool that everything is going to be a surprise this time around.

Over to you!

What have you been geeking out about lately? Let me know in the comments below, I'd love to geek out with you!

My Dream Crate with LootCrate: Let's Go on an Adventure

Dec 9, 2016

Happy Friday, friends! I have something exciting to share with you very own dream LootCrate. The nice folks over at the geeky subscription box service are inviting interested fans to put together their very own Dream Crate, and since I'm a huge fan of theirs, I was thrilled to join in!

The theme I chose for my crate is 'Adventure,' influenced mostly by the epic adventure my trainer is going on in Pokémon Moon, haha. Check out the gear I picked:

  1. Pokémon Sun and Moon Trainer Beanie - Okay, I know that this trainer beanie is for the female trainer in the game, and MAYBE boys wouldn't appreciate this beauty in their crate. But whatever, it's my Dream Crate and I'll include what I want! Besides, that beanie is just so perfect, right?
  2. Adventure Time/Neverending Story Mashup Poster - This mashup poster is so much fun! The Neverending Story was one of my favorite movies as a kiddo, and pretty much one of the coolest adventure movies I've ever seen. Combine it with one of my favorite shows and I'm sold.
  3. Beauty and the Beast Jordandené Tee - I'm always so in love with everything from Jordandené, and this top is so perfect. Belle was craving adventure and definitely found that in Beast's Castle!
  4. Lord of the Rings Fellowship Brooch - When I think of adventure, the first thing that comes to my mind is Frodo and his epic quest to destroy the One Ring. This brooch is a replica of the one seen on the cloaks that the Fellowship wear, and it's so gorgeous.
  5. Bioshock Infinite Elizabeth Funko Pop - Bioshock Infinite is one of my favorite games, and I loved watching Elizabeth's transformation from sheltered to badass as she adventured with Booker. Plus, she makes for an awfully cute Pop!
  6. River Song's TARDIS Journal - I think that of all the Doctor's companions, River's adventures were the most magical. She did have Time Lord DNA after all, so you know she lived through some crazy stuff.

Thanks so much for inviting me to join in on this adventure, LootCrate! Letting my imagination run wild with themes and cool goodies to include was so much fun, and I can't wait to see the Dream Crates that other LootCrate fans put together.

By the way, if you're interested in creating your own Dream Crate, you totally should. Who knows, maybe it'll get turned into a real life crate someday!

Over to you!

Are you a fan of LootCrate too? What would you include in your Dream Crate? Let me know in the comments below!

Gamer Gal: Pokémon Moon

Dec 6, 2016

Hi friends! It's been quite a while since I did a video game review, but I figured that since I'm obsessed with Pokémon Moon right now, I'd chat about it on the blog a bit.

First off, I'm a new 3DS owner (thanks to Black Friday) and I had no idea that screenshots aren't allowed for certain games. What the heck is up with that? So the in-depth review full of pretty Pokémon pictures that I envisioned for today isn't going to happen.

This is the first Pokémon game that I've played in years and years...okay, aside from Pokémon Go, which totally doesn't count. So much has changed from my days of playing Red, Blue, and Yellow!

First of all, they've switched up the traditional battle mechanics. Instead of Gym battles, you fight Totem Pokémon, super powerful Pokémon trained by island captains. Beating them grants you Z-crystals, which enable your Pokémon to do crazy cool special moves while you do a fun little dance...kinda weird, but I like it.

After you fight all of the Totem Pokémon on an island, you battle the island's Kahuna. This guy (or gal!) is basically the head honcho, and once you beat them you get to move on to the next island.

There are four islands in Alola, and they're all gorgeous. I love that Alola is totally Hawaii and I can live vicariously through my trainer, haha. The new Alolan versions of original Pokémon, like the super cute Alolan Meowth, are so much fun! I also love the new Professor (a quirky surfer bro) and your new 'rival,' Hau...though so far he's more of a goofy friend than a rival.

The game is full of so many extra perks that make the gameplay even more fun! Of course, I enjoy being able to change my trainer's clothes, hair style, and makeup since I've always hated that I couldn't customize my character in past games. And it's awesome that the background for battles is actually true to the region you're battling in, instead of that old generic background.

My very favorite change, though, is Pokémon Refresh! Basically, you're able to care for your Pokémon after battles by giving them medicine, grooming them, and feeding them Poké Beans. It sounds tedious, but it's really damn cute. Doing this helps raise the Pokemon's affection towards you, and the higher their affection, the better they fight in battles. Definitely a cool perk!

I'm only about halfway through the second island, so I'm not very far into the game. I'm loving it so far though! The cut scenes are gorgeous and make me feel like I'm watching anime. Plus, you can ride Pokémon! So there's that too.

Alright, this wasn't the informative review I had imagined posting today, but that's okay. I'm loving the game and all I want is to rave about it to anyone who will listen! Anyway, I'm off to play more Pokémon Moon...because duh.

Over to you!

Have you tried Pokémon Sun or Moon yet? What's your favorite change so far? Let me know in the comments below!
