Gamer Gal: Overwatch

May 31, 2016

I almost didn't get this post written in time to publish today because I was so busy playing Overwatch all weekend. I mean seriously, I had a four-day weekend and I did next to nothing...but I sure played a whole lot of Overwatch! I'm choosing not to see this as a bad thing, but as an opportunity to share the love with you all:P

I have so many thoughts about this game that it's almost difficult to break them down into coherent sentences, but I'm going to try my best. What it all comes down to, though, is that Overwatch is freakin' spectacular!

Blizzard's latest masterpiece is a first-person shooter, which I tend to hate. However, the varied skills and weapons that each character sports, coupled with the need to adapt throughout the game by switching heroes, makes this FPS feel like so much more to me. As of right now, there are 21 heroes, and they are broken down into four classes: offense, which are quick and aggressive damage dealers; defense, which are all about crowd-control; tanks, which boast the highest health pools so that they can get in the thick of the fight; and supports, who help heal, shield, and all-around keep their teammates in the game.

The gameplay seems simple enough. Two teams of six face off to either attack or defend an objective. The attack team will attempt to capture a control point or escort a payload to its destination, while the defend team will try to stop them! Team composition is everything, and it's essential to adapt to the map, the objectives, and the opposing team as you go. Adapting is easy enough since you can switch characters upon death if your team is in need of a change. For example, you might go from Pharah, the high-flying, rocket blasting offense character, to Mercy, the 'guardian angel' capable of resurrecting her teammates, if you find that your team is just too squishy without a healer.

My personal favorite is Lúcio, the funky Brazilian DJ who can skate along walls while dishing out speed boosts or heals to the team. The last time I checked, I've played about 25 hours and 14 of them have been with Lúcio. Compare that with my husband, who has played the same amount of time as I have but has only 6 hours on his most frequently played character. Whoops! My ability to adapt is not quite up to par as most of the higher level players that I've come across, but I'm making an effort!

There are 12 maps, all of which are gorgeous, and I'm constantly blown away by the level of detail in the characters and their movements. No joke, I think of this game as a work of art. It's just so pretty. I didn't want to bombard you all with thousands of screenshots quite yet but I mean, I might have to in the near future.

I almost dreaded showing this picture. Thirteen kills with twelve deaths? Twenty percent weapon accuracy? Eh, not such a good game for me. I did want to talk about this part of the game though, since I really love it. After every game, one player is shown making the 'play of the game,' which is usually a multi-kill or the well-timed use of a character's 'ultimate' skill. All twelve players watch this, so it's pretty exciting when you get to be the center of attention for a short time! Then we're all brought to a screen where four of the most effective players of the match, winning or losing team alike, are shown and you can vote for them, which essentially just means you're giving them a shout-out for doing a good job. And finally you're brought to the screen shown in this picture, which displays your stats for the game and the medals you were awarded based on your gameplay. I think it's a nice addition to the game, highlighting your awesomeness without seeming too competitive about it.

My big guilty pleasure right now is opening the loot boxes you're awarded for every level gained. It's a box full of random character skins, voice lines, sprays (you can tag all over the map with your character's spray if that's your thang), animations...just lots of fun things. You can also win gold from these boxes to use in the purchase of said skins, sprays, etc. Or you can use real money to buy more loot boxes, which my husband and I have done because we're completely obsessed.

So there you have it! I'm not the best at explaining things so hopefully I hit on the important aspects of the game, but if not, you should definitely check out this well-written review. So how about you? Do any of you play Overwatch? I'd love to hear who your favorite character is!

And hey, since we're on the topic of awesome Blizzard games, have you entered for a chance to win a super cute Arthas key chain yet? Check out my Villains Giveaway for some bad guy swag, like the Arthas key chain, a Dark Mark charm necklace, or a Darth Vader Tsum Tsum!

Villains Giveaway Hosted by (CLOSED)

May 27, 2016

Whew, I can't believe it's been over a week since I posted anything on this little blog! I could make excuses, but the truth is that I've just been feeling really lazy this week. I'm also completely obsessed with Overwatch, so that's been consuming quite a bit of my time! Seriously, if you haven't heard of it or checked it out yet, here's the cinematic trailer and a gameplay trailer. It's seriously so much fun, and I'm thinking that once I get a chance to tear myself away from the game for more than thirty minutes at a time, I'll write up a review=P

But anyway, I'm here now and I'm joining in on a fantastic giveaway that the lovely miss Pepi of dreamed up! Her idea was to create a giveaway based on all the bad guys we love to hate, and to link up with each other to give our readers even more fun prizes to win. There are so many villains that I love so it was tough to narrow down my list, but I decided to focus on some baddies from my very favorite fandoms. So without further ado, let's get to the prizes!

Darth Vader is someone that I grew up hating, but I do appreciate the fact that, thanks to the prequels, he's a character with so much depth. I mean, we get to see him go from a sweet little boy to the most evil man in the universe! Each tragedy that he endured growing up brought him closer to the Dark Side, and every evil act he committed made it more difficult for him to return to the Light. He ultimately redeems himself, but man, he does create a lot of chaos for our favorite good guys!

Arthas Menethil is the epitome of a villain, to me. This guy has absolutely no redeeming qualities, he's just straight up bad. If you're a Warcraft fan, you probably know that Arthas becomes the Lich King, one of the most evil beings that the world of Azeroth would know. As a young prince, Arthas was brave and loyal to his kingdom, but he slowly descended into madness. His discovery of the cursed blade Frostmourne was his ultimate undoing, and he became the host of a powerful evil known as the Lich King. To make a long story short, he killed his father, King Terenas, then corrupted his people and ruled his evil army from atop his frozen throne until his death. But look at the cute wittle keychain!!

Lord Voldemort has always really intrigued me. He was the most powerful wielder of the Dark Arts, and used his influence to control a number of evil wizards, witches, and dark creatures. He was bent on dominating the Muggles and Muggle-born wizards, and he murdered a whole lot of people trying to reach that goal. However, without Voldy, we wouldn't have Harry Potter as we know him or the magical story that helped shape so many of our lives<3

So there you have it! I'm giving away three different prizes to three different winners! The giveaway will run until June 24th, so you have plenty of time to get those entries in. My international friends are welcome to enter, the more the merrier! Enter to win either the:

  • Medium-sized (11 inch) Darth Vader Tsum Tsum plush...this thing is almost as big as my kitty!
  • 'Cute But Deadly' Arthas keychain...I bought an Illidan one for myself, so we could be keychain twinsies!
  • Dark Mark charm necklace...which is way daintier than I expected! Almost too cute to stand for, you know, the mark of Lord Voldemort=P

Geek Girl Bloggers Spring Fling Gift Exchange

May 18, 2016

I've been sick for the past few weeks and it's been really sucky. I'm feeling mostly back to normal now after staying home from work and resting for the last two days, so that's good:) I did manage to take some photos of the fabulous bracelet that Desiree of the blog Xo Mermaid Kisses got me for the Geek Girl Bloggers gift exchange!

It's an Orphan Black bracelet, which is perfect since I just posted about my crazy love for the show last month! Each little charm is adorable, my favorite being this perfect little blue one:

Felix is one of my very favorite characters, so the "Fetch me something gay" charm makes me giggle every time I see it:P

It fits perfectly and I'm absolutely in love with it. Thanks so much, Desiree! If you want to join in for the next gift swap, check out the Geek Girls x Bloggers Facebook group! I've raved about this group of gals on the blog before, but I just can't express how happy this little community makes me. Everyone is so supportive and sweet, and I definitely feel like I fit in with all the geeky goodness!

I always have so much fun participating in these swaps, though I did have a little snafu getting my gift out to my lovely swap partner, Pepi. It all worked out super smoothly though, and I'm happy to say she loved her gift. I can't wait to see what everyone else got!

6 on 6: It's Not Easy Being Green

May 9, 2016

So I managed to post another 6 on 6 late, which totally sucks, but better late than never! Again...sigh. I was super stoked about this month too because green is one of my favorite colors! Oh well, I just bought this gorgeous Happy Planner so I'm hoping that it will help me get organized and back on track with my blogging.

I was especially excited to get to show off my completely perfect Thane Krios print for this month's theme. Shout out to the lovely Kay of My Open Sketchbook for being such an amazing artist!

This little Bulbasaur plushie is one of my favorite geeky buys. The original Pokémon starters reign supreme<3 I was always more of a water gal myself, but my grass guy sure is cute!

How perfect is this beer label? I have yet to come across a geekier one, so of course I had to show it off here. And it's green, so double perfection!

These are actually the hubby's, I'm not exactly into DC. He's a HUGE fan of the Green Lantern though, which I find adorably endearing.

My little sister bought this for me last Christmas. Totally awesome! Rugrats was one of my favorite shows growing up, and this movie is even better than I remembered! Who else saw this in theaters? Aww.

So this shot is a little different than what I usually post, but I just had to share it. I went to a local beer festival with my husband and a few friends and it was such a blast! This guy was performing in a 90s music cover band, and I loved his green Power Rangers costume! Too perfect for this month, right?

As always, thanks to Emma of Scruffy-Little Nerd Herder for creating such a fun photo prompt. I loved checking out all the awesome green photos on the blogosphere this past weekend!
