March's Fandom of the Month Club + Giveaway (CLOSED)

Mar 31, 2016

 photo FOTMC_zpsstnznkgs.png
Happy César Chávez day! Who else is off work today? One of the perks of a government job, I guess:P The husband and I are spending our day off getting our car tuned up and going to the doctor because obviously we know how to party.

I received my second Fandom of the Month Club box last week and, although I think the jewelry is super cute, I'm not really into this month's theme.

 photo FOTMC_zpskbgmikly.png
I know a lot of you will think this is crazy, but I'm just not into the Avengers. I've tried to watch the movies and I'm sure I'd love them if I gave em a fair shot, but it hasn't happened quite yet. So when I found out that the March box would be Avengers-themed, I wasn't thrilled. I know a lot of you gals appreciate this fandom more than I do though, so I'm going to give away this month's jewelry!

 photo FOTMC4_zpsd4ky5ucv.png
First up is this Spider-Man cuff bracelet, which I think would be pretty dang cool if it weren't for the dangling Spidey. Now that I've watched Danielle's unboxing video, I realize that the Spider-Man charm is supposed to lay on top of the web (duh, Ash) but I didn't manage to take a picture of that:/

 photo FOTMC3_zpspqnapg3s.png
Then we have the Iron Man Arc Reactor necklace! When I first opened it up, my husband and I took turns guessing at what the heck it was. I did eventually figure it out, but as you can probably tell, I don't know a whole lot about Iron Man. But still, cool design AND it glows in the dark!

 photo FOTMC5_zpsz7vnmabt.png

I adore these Captain America earrings! My ears are extra sensitive, but if I could I would totally wear them to watch Captain America: Civil War when I'm inevitably dragged to the theater next month, haha.

 photo FOTMC2_zpsu1bhju54.png

And last but not least, this super sweet Thor ring! Of all the Marvel heroes, Thor is one I'm actually familiar with so I think this ring is pretty cool!

Truth time: FOTMC includes a magnet every month, and this month it was a cute Loki one. I forgot to take a picture of it because I immediately slapped it on the side of my computer, so needless to say, I'm not giving that cutie away:P

Time for the Giveaway!

Now that you've made it through my rambling, it's time for the fun part! The prize pack includes the Spider-Man cuff bracelet, Iron Man necklace, Captain America earrings, Thor ring, and muslin drawstring bag for one lucky winner! The giveaway ends next Friday, so the winner will get the goods with plenty of time to show off at the Civil War premiere<3 Good luck!

A Day in the Life of a Lady Geek: March

Mar 28, 2016

This year is flying by so quickly! Can you believe we've already passed Easter?! I hope you all had a gorgeous weekend, whether you celebrate the holiday or not. Today I'm sharing another 'A Day in the Life of a Lady Geek' with photos from my Easter! As always, lots of thanks to Dina Farmer for creating this fun photography prompt<3

Her Geekery
9 a.m.

Trying to decide what to wear for brunch with my family! I didn't end up wearing either of these dresses, but I still wanted to share my super cute kitty dress with you all. I got it from Target a couple years back and it's been well worn ever since:P

Her Geekery
10 a.m.

Such a gorgeous, sunny day. We were meeting up with my family in Newport Beach, so I had to get a few snaps of the ocean!

Her Geekery
11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

My little sister brought some pink bunny ears and forced us all to pose with them, haha. My husband is thrilled, obviously. We had brunch at a little restaurant called the Newport Landing, and it was so much fun! I didn't manage to take any pictures while we were here because I was too busy stuffing my face at the buffet and admiring the ocean view.

Her Geekery
1 p.m.

After we said our goodbyes to our family, Gary and I stopped by our favorite local liquor store. That's right, we have a favorite liquor store. That just kind of happens when you love craft beer and stumble across a store with a fantastic variety!

Her Geekery
2 p.m.

I spent this hour opening up my Fandom of the Month Club box and taking pictures of what was inside. I'm actually going to be hosting a giveaway of the contents within the next couple days because, even though the jewelry is super cute, I'm not exactly into this month's fandom. I think some of you ladies will get way more use out of this one!

Her Geekery
3 p.m.

Digging into our Easter baskets! So many yummy goodies, like beer-flavored jelly beans and hard Root family knows me so well!

Her Geekery
4 p.m.

I bought this fabulous Jean-Ralphio print from Oh Gosh, Cindy on Etsy a little while back, and it came in the mail a few days ago! It got a little bent during shipping, so I've been trying to flatten it out in a heavy book. It didn't really work, but I still think it's an amazing print!

Her Geekery
5 p.m.

Aaaand now it's beer time! I did stay up later than 5 p.m. I swear, but I wanted to edit my photos and get my post set up for today so I put my camera away for the day.

Definitely an uneventful Easter, but that's how the hubby and I like it! Quiet time with the people I love is my favorite, so this was exactly how I wanted to spend my holiday. How was your weekend? Did you do anything exciting for Easter? Tell me about your adventures!

Funko Fridays: Show & Tell

Mar 25, 2016

Happy happy Friday! This week has been an emotional rollercoaster for me and I am SO GLAD it's over. Sorry I've been a bit absent in the blog scene lately! I have an awful lot of stuff going on right now, including a sprained wrist that's been really holding me back. I'm hoping I'll bounce back soon, but for now I'll just keep gathering inspiration from you lovely ladies!

Anyway, I haven't participated in Funko Fridays for a while now because I'm super lazy, but Show & Tell is my favorite so here we are! This week I'm showing off my adorable glow-in-the-dark Hot Topic exclusive Adipose Pop!

 photo adipose_zpsd0b3ynia.png

Such a cutie patootie, right? His little snaggle tooth is perfection, and I love that he's so soft and lumpy:P Please excuse me for this next photo because it's pretty much the blurriest one I've ever taken...

 photo glowy_zpszega3mrd.png

...but I did want to show off the glow! I haven't had glow-in-the-dark anything since I was a kid, so I'm having a lot of fun with this guy.

As usual, I want to give a shout-out to Pepi and Kimi for hosting the Funko Fridays link-up! I can't wait to check out all the Funko goodness:) I've been itchin' to buy more, it's such an expensive obsession! Have you gotten any new Pops lately?

Epic's 3 Random Questions Tag!

Mar 21, 2016

 photo sisters_zpslt9voc4u.gif

There's a fun little questions tag making its way around our geeky blogger community, and I love the thought behind it! It was created by Kayla of Epicfied and its just three short questions aimed towards getting to know each other a little better. The lovely miss Pepi tagged me and I'm happy to keep up the fun! Before we get to the questions, I'm going to tag Kayly of My Open Sketchbook, Nicole of CuppaGeek, and Natalie of Natalie Patalie. No pressure to join in if you aren't feeling it, ladies! I just adore you and want to learn a little more about you, no big deal=P So without further ado, let's get to the questions!

1. How did you think of your username/website name?
It's a pretty lame story, actually. Before Her Geekery, I always took my blog names from song lyrics that I liked. For example, my blog before this one, Oh Sweet Samsara, was named after the song Sweet Samsara by Miho Hatori. It just always made sense to me to name my blogs after things that I really loved, and since I'm not very creative, song lyrics worked best for me!

When I decided to re-brand and focus more on what I enjoy writing about, I wanted my blog to feel more cohesive. I knew I wanted to write about life as a lady geek, so I wanted my blog's name to convey that idea. I spent a lot of time with blog name generators and tried out A LOT of different names that I thought would fit and eventually decided on Her Geekery. I think it works, and I'm happy I stuck with it!

2. Quick! Choose three fandoms that you’re a part of and those can be the only ones you can ever listen to, watch, read, etc. (and why?)
Definitely a tough question! I think that first, I'd go with Harry Potter. Always. There are so many things about the book series that have made it such a special part of my life. Not going to lie, I'm a hater when it comes to the movies, but I will love the books forever. I could read them over and over again (I have, in fact!) and I can't see myself ever getting sick of them. I grew up with them and they helped shape me into the person I am today, so it's a no-brainer to me.

The other two aren't so easy to narrow down, though! I guess my next one would have to be Friends (the TV show...not, you know, my actual friends). Friends has made a huge difference in my life...I seriously don't know who I'd be without it. When I'm feeling depressed or anxious, I watch it until I feel better. Never fails! I've seen each episode at least a dozen times and I know more about Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, and Joey than pretty much anything else, haha.

 photo friends_zpsaftb8paz.gif

My third choice would have to be World of Warcraft! The WoW universe is so vast and the lore is super extensive. I've been working my way through the lore books and I'm nowhere near finished, so I know this fandom is capable of keeping me entertained. Sometimes I feel like I've lost faith in the game but it always manages to draw me back in.

3. Your three dream jobs, if money wasn’t an issue?
1) The owner/head brewer of a micro-brewery! It'd be a ton of hard work, but it'd also be really, really fun. This has been a huge dream of mine for the past few years, and I've taken business entrepreneur classes to learn more about making this a reality. The classes did open up my eyes to just how difficult starting up and maintaining a business like this would be, but it's still something I think my husband and I would be good at!

2) Professional author! This is going to sound a little messed up, but sometimes when I read YA books, I think to myself, 'I could totally write better than this.' I know that sounds kinda snobby but seriously, some of the stuff out there is completely ridiculous! Writing has been a big passion of mine since I was young. I think I could kill it as an author, but actually sitting down and putting my ideas on to paper is tough! Which, of course, makes me feel a lot of respect for even the worst YA authors=P Writing a book is a huge undertaking, but it's something I really hope to do within the next few years.

3) Some sort of professional traveler. Like, just travel and get paid to do it. I've been going through a pretty bad existential crises lately and all I really want to do is just get the heck out of here and explore! All I know is that I don't want to be stuck working for the government forever.

 photo swanson_zpsmqvt8xdo.gif

Alright ladies, now it's your turn! If you join in, please let me know because I'd love to read your answers. And if I didn't tag you but you want in on the fun, that's cool too! Here's to a new week, I hope you all have a great one.

Boss Babes: Kay & Liana

Mar 15, 2016

I have a ton of ideas for this segment since there are so many fantastic ladies in the blogging biz! It's just my little shout out to the creative gals who have been and continue to be a huge inspiration to me. Today I wanted to rave about two super creative ladies, Kayly of My Open Sketchbook and Liana of Liana Kangas<3

My Open Sketchbook
Kayly's blog was one of the first that I came across when I joined the Female Geek Bloggers Google+ group, and I knew right away that she was someone I'd get along with. She's such a down-to-earth lady, and I always have fun reading about her life! Not only is she an awesome homeschooling mama to her sweet daughter, she's also super geeky and an incredibly talented artist.

I had the good fortune of winning her badass Beetlejuice fanart back in November, and he's still one of my favorite pieces to show off to my friends! I'm not going to pretend to know anything about art, but I mean, he looks pretty dang perfect to me. She's currently preparing to open up her own art shop, which I'm crazy stoked about! In the meantime, head on over to her blog to enter her fanart giveaway, because duh, you can never have too much great fanart.

Liana Kangas

Liana is someone I very recently fell in love with. She started blogging again last week and I seriously can't wait to read more from her! I came across her through the Geek Girls x Bloggers Facebook group and I'm so glad to have found her because seriously, look at this Steve Zissou print!

Steve Zissou

It's like a dream come true, haha. My husband isn't usually on board with letting me indulge in my fandoms, but he was immediately into buying this print (although he really wouldn't have had much of a choice)! Take a look at her shop because I promise you, there's something there for every geeky gal or guy;)

If you love gorgeous fan art and general geekery, be sure to check these ladies out and show them some love! And if you want to check out even more super cool bloggers, head on over to my last Badass Lady Bloggers post where I basically confess my total adoration for Pepi and Rav.

On another art-related note, the World of Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 1 art book that I pre-ordered last month is shipping today! I've been excited for this ever since my husband texted me about it and I can't wait to share it with you all once I get my hands on it! How about you WoW fans, are any of you buying this art book too?

Geeky Goodies: Mother of Dragons

Mar 9, 2016

I haven't been much use these past few days. To be totally honest, all I really feel like doing lately is watching House of Cards:P The hubs and I just picked the show up last week but we've been watching for hours every night, so we're already on the third season. No spoilers, pretty please!

Despite my new obsession, I did manage to tear my eyes away from Frank Underwood for a couple of minutes to watch the new trailer for season six of Game of Thrones! If you haven't seen it yet, let me help you out:

I'm beyond excited, you guys. Since I'm so stoked on all the Game of Thrones awesomeness AND in honor of International Women's Day (which was yesterday, I'm way behind on the times here), I'm dedicating a Geeky Goodies post to my favorite khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen!

I love Dany for many reasons. She's a compassionate woman, but she's strong-willed and not afraid to get her hands a little dirty for the good of her people. Sure, she makes mistakes, but who doesn't? She's had to deal with a lot of crap during her short life, and I admire the fact that she hasn't let any of it break her. She's stronger than ever and she knows what she wants, and I think she's just fabulous. So here are a few of my favorite Etsy goodies, inspired by the Mother of Dragons herself<3

  1. Daenerys Targaryen Pocket T-Shirt | IIMVClOTHING
  2. Khaleesi Quote Retro Poster | The Hog Art & Design
  3. Game of Thrones Quote Mug | Design Genes
  4. Game of Thrones Cuff Bracelet | Family House Stampin'
  5. Illustrated Portrait Art Brooch Badge | Clorty Cat Crafts

6 on 6: Pretty in Pink

Mar 6, 2016

Oh no! Back to work again, tomorrow. Work work work, all me do is work! Really though, I'm so thankful to have had a couple days off to relax and recoup. How did you lovely ladies spend your weekend?

Today is the 6th, which means it's time for another '6 on 6!' Definitely one of my favorite photo prompts to participate in, so thanks as always to Emma of Scruffy Little Nerd Herder for creating such a fun segment!

This month's theme is pink, and I had a little trouble pulling together six geeky pink things for my post. I'm not the girliest of girls, and pink isn't high on my list of favorite colors, haha. A couple of these aren't especially geeky, so just bear with me please:P

Craft Beer

Yummy craft beer! This label for 'The Business' by Gigantic Brewing Company was too perfect for this post. The art style reminds me a bit of Adventure Time, does anyone else agree? Anyway, I haven't tried many Brit-American pale ales, but I did think this one was pretty tasty!

The Royal Tenenbaums

I'm a huge Wes Anderson nerd, and I've always loved this particular DVD insert for The Royal Tenenbaums. If you unfold it, it's a map of the Tenenbaum house with floorplans and details from the rooms, illustrated by Eric Chase Anderson.

Sailor Moon

I've talked about my gorgeous Luna-inspired clutch by Mari of Sent From Mars on the blog before, but I just felt the urge to show her off again<3 Such perfect details!

Doctor Who Card

Okay, remember all of the fabulous Valentine's cards I got from the Geek Girls x Bloggers card swap last month? This is the card that I sent out to the gals, and I kept one for myself because I just thought it was so adorable! I mean, this line would totally work on me, just sayin'.

Too Faced Cosmetics

I love that this little box is totally reminiscent of something out of a Wes Anderson movie. It's actually full of beautiful eyeshadow palettes by Too Faced, and I won it a couple months back! I'm not going to lie, I know absolutely nothing about make-up so I haven't used it very extensively. BUT it's fun experimenting, and maybe someday I'll be a pro at this stuff! Planner

My lovely planner! I've had a lot of fun playing around with this guy and attempting to organize my chaotic life:P I've also received a ridiculous amount of compliments on this because it's just so cute!

Swift Lovebird World of Warcraft

Aaaaand I know this is picture number seven but I couldn't help including a screenie of my Swift Lovebird mount and Lovebird Hatchling pet! They are just so perfect for this month's theme, and of course I had to pose with them in front of the cherry blossom trees in the Arboretum.

If you're interested in more '6 on 6' photo fun, check out my January and February posts! I can't wait to "ooh" and "aah" over all of the other pretty pink posts that I've seen go up today, so I'm off to do just that:)

A Day in the Life of a Lady Geek: February

Mar 2, 2016

It looks like the A Day in the Life segment has come to an end, but I've always had so much fun with it that I'm still going to post mine monthly. If you participated or if you want to join in the future, definitely let me know so I can check out your awesome photos! A Day in the Life was created by Dina of Dina Farmer, who takes some of the most gorgeous photos that I've ever seen! If you've never checked out her blog before, you definitely should because she is one cool geeky mama.

The hubs and I visited The Huntington last Saturday, February 27th. It's officially called 'The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens,' and it certainly lives up to its fancy pants name. I can't believe I've spent my entire life in Southern California without ever having heard of it! I'm so cultured, obviously:P

Anyway, I took about a bazillion photos, but I'm only sharing a handful so that, you know, I don't bore you all or anything. The typical 'A Day in the Life' format is one photo for each hour that I spent awake, but honestly, I want y keeping track of the time because I was having too much fun! So here's a whole bunch of Huntington goodness<3

The Huntington

We spent the majority of our time exploring the various botanical gardens. It blew me away how colorful it was, despite it being February! I can't imagine how gorgeous this place is in the Spring when all the flowers are in bloom.

The Huntington

The Huntington

The Huntington

This is probably my favorite photo that I took, except for the freaking orange cone in the back left corner. Argh! I didn't notice it until I was editing this post...I would typically Photoshop something like that out but...meh.

The Huntington

I think I enjoyed the Japanese gardens most because holy crap, they're so pretty! Definitely made me want to visit Japan even more than I did before.

The Huntington

The Huntington

I managed to snap this shot in the split second that Gary posed before he turned away laughing. He's not exactly a 'pose for the picture' kind of guy:P

The Huntington

The Huntington

Gary's forced smile in this one just kills me! We took A LOT of selfies and the poor guy was a good sport about it. I wore my Team Rocket shirt in celebration of Pokemon's 20th anniversary!

The Huntington

The Huntington

This was one of the very few indoor photos that I was able to take. In the art exhibits, photos weren't allowed, though I did take a few sneaky cell phone shots. Photos were allowed in this particular exhibit was a science museum of sorts, with different sections for astronomy, biology, electricity, and so on. So basically, Gary's favorite area!

The Huntington

On the way home, we got stuck in nightmare traffic because the main freeway was completely shut down. We ended up taking side streets for a while and happened upon this fun graffiti mural!

We got home a little before 6pm, but the power went out in our whole dang neighborhood so there wasn't much else to see, haha.

So that was a day in my life! On another note, I totally bought the coolest shirt ever, which I got in the mail yesterday along with some extra goodies from Jordan and the gang at Jordandené! Have you checked out their shirt of the month for March? I swear, I'd buy up everything in that shop if I could!
