Geek Girl Bloggers Valentine's Card Exchange

Feb 29, 2016

I'm getting this post up way later than I would have liked...by now, most of you have posted about your fabulous V-day cards from the Geek Girls x Bloggers card exchange, but I swear I have a good reason for the delay. I spent Saturday with my sweetheart at The Huntington, which was pretty much the most gorgeous place I've ever visited! I can't believe I've spent my whole life in Southern California without checking that place out, so kudos to my hubby for planning a fantastic date day<3 I basically spent Sunday recuperating and writing this post, but I'm going to bombard you all with pictures during my (again, delayed) A Day in the Life post on Wednesday, so I apologize in advance=P

But anyway, this is the second awesome exchange that I got to participate in for Valentine's Day with my favorite blogging group, Geek Girls x Bloggers. The first was our Undercover Cupid gift exchange hosted by Danielle of From Girlie to Nerdy, which I posted about a few days ago. This super fun card exchange was organized by the lovely Dina of Dina Farmer. I had such a blast choosing my cards to send out and receiving so many adorable cards in return!

So many cute and unique cards! I love seeing the various fandoms come together, too. But I did, of course, enjoy getting so many cat cards:

Tee hee! That hipster cat especially is just PERFECT. And I was blown away by the handmade cards I received! So many talented ladies, am I right? Not gonna lie, I'll probably end up framing that Hello Sweetie card by Kayly because it's absolutely gorgeous! I'm so grateful to be a part of such a fun community. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't think I'd enjoy blogging nearly as much if I hadn't stumbled upon this group of gals.

Geek Girl Bloggers Undercover Cupid

Feb 24, 2016

The week's halfway over, yay! I really can't wait to kick back and relax this weekend because man, I'm just not feeling the whole work thing this week. I just want to cuddle with my kitty, drink some wine, and read like, a thousand books. I'm actually in the middle of three different books right now! I finally picked up the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld (which I'm loving so far!) and I found The Diviners by Libba Bray (which I'm hoping picks up eventually...) at my local library. I'm also letting what sounds like a distinguished British gentleman read A Game of Thrones to me on audiobook while I'm at work. So many books, so little time, amirite?

Speaking of books, I recently participated in an Undercover Cupid gift swap with my favorite blogging group and was gifted with this gorgeous copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales!

My secret swap partner was the lovely Stacey of Geeks & Lattes, and she really hit the nail on the head with this book! It's absolutely beautiful, with shiny silver foil on the cover and pretty silver edges. There are illustrations throughout and the end of each story is decorated with a cute little gnome drawing!

Basically, I'm crazy about my gift! Thanks again, Stacey! And thanks to Danielle of From Girlie to Nerdy for organizing another awesome gift swap. If you want in on the fun, you should join the Geek Girls x Bloggers Facebook group! No joke, I would have WAY less fun blogging if it weren't for this group of fun and supportive gals<3

Did you get anything especially fantastic for Valentine's day this year? My husband and I don't really celebrate V-day, so the gift swap and card exchange (that I'll be talking about in a few days!) really made the holiday special for me:)

Funko Fridays: The Show That Made Me Want (Most Of) Its Funkos

Feb 12, 2016

I feel like almost all of my most recent Funko Fridays posts have been about my Doctor Who Pops, which means two things to me: 1) I need more Funkos and 2) Doctor Who is my obvious choice for this week's theme. Technically, the theme is 'the TV show that made you want all of its Funkos,' but I don't actually want ALL of the Doctor Who Pops. I know, I know, bad Whovian. But I think that until they come out with a line of Farscape Funko Pops, there really aren't any shows that have made me lust after all the Pops. I've never watched Classic Who, so I'm not really feeling the Four Pop, and as much as I love all of the new Doctors....I really only care about displaying one in teeny vinyl figurine form.

Because duh. Really, I just want to collect the rest of the Doctor Who baddies and the Rose Tyler Pop, because even though I prefer to ship Ten and me, I guess Rose will do.

As I've shown many times before on the blog, I only have Ten, the TARDIS, the Dalek, and the Dalek Sec Pops. There are still a handful of other Doctor Who Funkos that I plan on getting, but probably no other Doctors, and definitely no other companions aside from Rose. Possibly Jack Harkness because Captain Jack is nom. And not going to lie, I'd totally pick up a Donna Pop if they made one!

Thanks as always to the lovely Pepi and Kimi for encouraging all the Funko madness! If you're lusting after a certain show's Pops, why don't you join the Funko Fridays link-up? It's always so much fun checking out everyone's collections!

The Golden Snitch Giveaway: February (CLOSED)

Feb 11, 2016

The Golden Snitch Geeky Giveaway - Sponsors - February 2016
You guys! I joined in on another thing! Haha. I had so much fun participating in the first Golden Snitch Giveaway that I couldn't pass up the chance to join in again. This month you'll have a chance to win some awesome Marvel goodies! I've never been really into the Marvel universe...I love the X-Men and I'm a sucker for Spider-Man, but aside from them, I just didn't get it. Recently, I became OBSESSED with Jessica Jones, so I think there's still hope for me. Hubby is really excited about Deadpool so we'll definitely be seeing that one in theaters, and who knows, maybe I'll get in to Marvel in a big way! But enough of my blabbing, check out the giveaway!

__________________________

If you missed the first installment of the monthly giveaway hosted by Kimi Who and her geeky sponsors like me, The Golden Snitch - never fear, because we've banded together to bring you another geeky giveaway! You will get the chance to win a special prize box containing a mixture of pop culture items which total value is $100 or more (although we're focusing on the Marvel universe this month because we're all pretty excited about the new Deadpool movie coming out). But before we get into the giveaway, won't you please get to know your hosts? The giveaway sponsors come from all walks of geekdom and I'm excited for you to get to know us all better.

Say Hello To...

Since the new Deadpool movie comes out this month, Kimi wanted to find out what everyone's favorite Marvel Universe character was. There are so many to choose from and the answers were quite diverse.

KIMI | Kimi Who? I didn't realize how difficult it would be to answer this question until I had to think of my own answer. Oops! I know that there are some obvious answers - one of them for me would be Iron Man, because I've always thought he was the kind of bad boy you could still bring home to your parents. But lately, I'm really feeling Kilgrave from Jessica Jones. Okay fine, it helps that he's played by David Tennant... but I just honestly think he's an interesting and complex character that I want to learn more about.

MICHELLE | Geeked Out Girl This is a difficult one for me. I have different faves depending on the mood I'm in. However, I guess I would say Captain America has always been at the top of my list. He best represents who I am as a person and the values I hold dear.

LAURA | Con Couture My husband's is definitely Captain America because he's an all around good guy and American hero. Mine would be the Xmen. If I had to narrow it down to 1 (which is hard,) I would probably choose Magneto. He has awesome power and I like complex characters that vacillate between good, evil, and somewhere in between.

CHRISTINA | Cali Darling I'm not too into Marvel Universe but I would have to say Spiderman. I loved all the Spiderman movies though.

JENN | The Diary of a Dreamer It's either Deadpool of Captain America. I like Deadpool's sense of humor and how he isn't censored, but I like what Captain America stands for (since I was a service member)

HEATHER | The Nerdy Fox This is such a hard question. I've always been a fan of Marvel so it really depends on my mood and what version we're talking about. I love the Guardians of the Galaxy movie (and adore Rocket Raccoon and Groot) but if we're talking comic books it's a whole different story. I love X-Men, especially Nightcrawler. I mean, he teleports by opening a portal to another dimension. He's pretty freaking rad. Don't even get me started on the bad guys. HELLO LOKI ANYONE?! I am in love with movie Loki. Basically, what I am saying is that I am a huge Marvel fan and always have been, it's hard for me to choose just one that I love more than the others.

ANGIE | My So-Called Chaos A few months ago I would have told you it was Wolverine, or Storm... I loved X-Men growing up and used to watch all the cartoons. However, thanks to Netflix, I'm completely enamored with Jessica Jones. Well and her hunky hunk Luke. Meow.

ASHLEE | Her Geekery I've always had a soft spot for Spider-Man. I think I connected so strongly with him because us geeky kids have to stick together =P Now if only we could get a good Spider-Man movie, I'd be one happy gal!

DANIELLE | From Girlie to Nerdy Black Widow - she can hold her own with the guys and she can kick some serious butt!

JESSICA | Two Married Geeks My favorite Marvel character is Hawkeye because he doesn't need superpowers to be the world's greatest marksman! A close second is Ms. Marvel, because my daughter's name is Marvel.

VANESSA | 2 Dorks in Love I have become amused by wisecracking Deadpool. It's great to have a character that can break the 4th wall i.e. knows he's in a comic and talks to the audience. Plus hey - tacos and chimichangas!

LIANA | Liana Art & Illustration Originally, I'd have picked Spiderman (now you're saying, which one Liana?!) but after working at a comic shop I got to divulge in the world of Peter Quill (Star-Lord) and the space cowboy that he is! I love the Guardians of the Galaxy movie as well, and the Kitty Pride/Peter Quill fandom that comes with the comics. :)

JESSICA | The Nifty Nerd Who's my favorite Marvel Universe character? Choosing 1 to highlight, I'd have to say Iron Man. Known as many things - genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist - Iron Man uses his wealth to help fund the Avengers to improve the world around him. He's also always tinkering; always working on improving his technology and never settling for what he's already accomplished.

KAYLY | My Open Sketchbook SO HARD TO PICK JUST ONE. For now, I'll say Vision. How he must view humans with all his knowledge endlessly fascinates me.

TISH | The Veganista Foodie My favorite Marvel character is Storm. I'm a big fan of the X-Men. Storm has awesome abilities and she's bad ass.

DARCIE | Homemaker Vs The World While I am a huge fan of many Marvel characters, I think Deadpool ranks at the top of my list. I love both the comedic relief of the character and that he breaks the fourth wall. While Deadpool comics may be more on the dark side, I still really enjoy them!

JESSICA | Jessica Takes On The World Thor, because I am a fan of Chris Hemsworth ;)

Time for a Giveaway!

This month's giveaway is pretty exciting because it's got so many items in it! It's all Marvel Universe based and so incredibly... geeky. This giveaway is open to residents of the United States and Canada only.

Geeky Goodies: Galentine's Day

Feb 10, 2016

I can't believe Valentine's day is only a few days away! I've been having such a blast opening up all of the V-day cards from my fellow geeky ladies over in the Geek Girls x Bloggers Facebook group, and the Undercover Cupid gift I received yesterday is PERFECT! I'll be showing off all of my goodies later this month, but today I wanted to share a post dedicated to my favorite womance.

Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins are beyond adorable. They can be their goofy selves together, they're super supportive of one another, and they just plain love each other. Watching them makes me miss my best friend so much it hurts! So in honor of Galentine's day, here's a Geeky Love post all about ladies celebrating ladies.

  1. Parks and Rec Greeting Cards | Say Anything Creations
  2. Best Friends Travel Coffee Mug | page261
  3. Waffle Friendship Necklaces | fwirl
  4. Ovaries Before Brovaries Print | The Messinger
  5. Leslie and Ann Earrings | Peachy Apricot

Are you going to be celebrating Galentine's day with your best gals? With work and grown-up stuff going on, I don't think I'll be seeing my bestie any time soon, so I'll just be celebrating in spirit. If you get to see your best girlfriend, make sure to remind her that she's a poetic, noble land-mermaid<3

6 on 6: Black Like My Heart

Feb 6, 2016

I'm super late posting my '6 on 6' today because I've been lazy and WoW-obsessed these past couple weeks. Such is life, right? World of Warcraft, Neko Atsume, and lots of Mozart in the Jungle! Have any of you watched it? I've always loved Gael GarcĂa Bernal and he is absolute perfection as an eccentric conductor. Gah, he is just so adorable! Plus, this show gives me all kinds of feels since it definitely makes me miss my days as a clarinetist</3

This month's theme is black. Not gonna lie, I'm a little bummed that February's color wasn't pink, but maybe that was a little too stereotypical for Emma when she created this prompt? We get pink next month, so I guess I'll survive until then:P

I recently posted about one of my favorite recent reads, Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. There are so many gorgeous pages that I just can't get enough of, but this spread is my favorite! That 'death blooms' is so eerie and lovely.

My black Funko Pops! The Dalek Sec is my favorite because he's adorable, but I love my boys too!

Some of my very favorite books are black or mostly black. The top book, The Gunslinger by Stephen King, is the first in the best book series I've ever read. It's kind of western/horror...but not too scary!

I am still so madly in love with my The Wild Unknown tarot deck. The artwork is so beautiful, and I love those little splashes of color.

I couldn't pass up this yummy beer by Elysian. Corporate beer still sucks! The growlers behind the bottle are from my favorite Orange County breweries, and definitely looked more black than amber before I took this picture, haha.

I just had to stick these 'Cute but Deadly' magnets on my computer! Look at the itty bitty Illidan, squee!

Anyway, I saw quite a few '6 on 6' posts up that I can't wait to check out. Thanks as always to Emma of Scruffy-Little Nerd Herder for creating this awesomely geeky prompt, I always have so much fun with it!

Gamer Gal: Neko Atsume

Feb 1, 2016

I'm not feeling super inspired to write right now, and I'm pretty sure it's because I'm obsessed with Neko Atsume. So I figured that since I'm so hooked right now, I should spread the love!

If you haven't heard of this super addictive mobile game yet, it's time we remedy that! It's a simple premise: you exchange fish for goodies that help you lure cats to your yard...so that you can take photos of them, of course. The adorable cartoon kitties use your goodies and eat your cat food, then leave more fish for you to buy more crap for them to play with and eat. It's the best, seriously.

Okay, so there's not exactly a lot of action. I mean, you have to exit the game and wait a while for the kitties to be drawn to your yard full of cat-friendly stuff. When you open the game back up, fingers crossed you have a cute kitty or two to admire! Unfortunately, you can't interact with them in any way. All you can really do is take pictures and add them to your Catbook. But I think the simplicity is what makes the game so hard to put down.

You get to read about all of the kitties that come into your yard, and certain items that you buy can lure 'rare cats' like Mr. Meowgi and Billy the Kitten. After a cat spends enough time in your yard, they might leave you their 'mementos,' little tokens of love like you would expect from a real cat. I've only gotten four mementos so far (including a shiny acorn and a soft brush) but I swear, I get a big grin on my face whenever I get a new one. Is that pathetic? Eh, whatever.

What I'm trying to say is that if you're a crazy cat lady like me or you just plain like adorable, slightly mindless things, you should run to grab this game like Tubbs running to eat all the fancy food! It's free to install from the Google Play store and iTunes.

Just a head's up, you still have a few days to enter to win the epic Golden Snitch Giveaway prize pack! Enter here if you don't want to miss out.
