NaNoWriMo Update

Nov 25, 2015

Alright, let's just get this out of the way...I didn't even come close to finishing my novel this month. I capped out at a little over 11,000 words (yikes!) and just felt completely burned out and uninspired. However, I still think that NaNoWriMo is incredibly fun and I'm SO EXCITED for those authors who have either finished their 50,000 words or will be finishing by November 30th.

I was curious about what NaNo winners do with their writing after November, and I found a few really helpful articles! Even with just the little bit of writing that I've done so far, I've been itching to revise pretty much ever since I started. From what I've read, that's normal for new writers. I resisted (mostly), but I love this advice from Scribendi about waiting before revising:

"You need to wait long enough so you are able to critically approach your NaNoWriMo novel and make the tough decisions that are required to perform effective manuscript editing."

I've never finished a novel but based on what I've experienced so far, I can only imagine the level of patience required to wait before editing your work. I was second-guessing most of the words I wrote as I wrote them...it wasn't until I decided to tune out my inner editor and just write my story that I stopped trying to revise. This post by Candace Johnson of Change It Up Editing is a couple years old, but still perfectly applicable to those finishing up their NaNoWriMo novels:

"Do a happy dance, pat yourself on the back, announce to the world (or at least your Facebook friends) that YOU DID IT, and then put your manuscript away for a while."

How long should you wait to revise, though? From what I'm finding online, that's a touchy subject for some writers. It looks like two weeks to a month is the standard, but some authors wait up to a year or longer! I can't imagine spending so much time with a novel only to wait that long for revisions but hey, whatever works right? At any rate, I'm absolutely positive that I'll be finishing my novel at some point, because I do love my story. The revisions will be the icing on the cake for me because I LOVE editing...I guess I'm just strange=P

Anyway, I did want to give a little update on my NaNo adventure. I didn't finish this time, but I still learned so much about myself and my writing style, so I'm incredibly thankful for that. I think I want to prepare for NaNo next year (I just joined on a whim this year with absolutely no preperation) since I hit numerous brick walls of writer's block this go-around. I think that at least having an outline would be very helpful next time!

If I don't catch you before tomorrow, happy Thanksgiving to my friends in the United States!
I don't eat meat, but if I did, I would gladly eat Jar Jar Binks...just to get rid of him, you know? Ha! Seriously though, I want you to know how thankful I am for all of you. The female geek blogging community is so incredible and has really made me feel welcome, and I am truly thankful for you amazing ladies! Enjoy your time with loved ones and I'll catch you all again on Friday<3
